Daffy for Daffodils

Spring is here and soon the Daffodils will be peaking up out of the dirt. The birds are returning from their winter vacation to summer in Canada and other signs are that Daffy Duck (and the Road Runner) on T.V. always “spring” to the occasion!Daffodils

Meaning: regard, new beginnings, unrequited love, chivalry, “You’re the only one” and “The sun is always shining when I’m with you.”

History: Daffodils are mostly native to the Mediterranean region, but a few species are found through central Asia and China. The Romans were the first people to cultivate the daffodil.


  • All daffodil species have a central trumpet-shaped corona (crown-like appendage) surrounded by a ring of petals.
  • The traditional daffodil has a golden yellow color all over, but the corona may often feature a contrasting color such as that of a slice of lime.
  • There are over 25,000 varieties of daffodils in shades of yellow, white, orange and peachy pink.

Care Tips:

  • Daffodils secret a sappy substance called latex which is harmful to otheA single Daffodilr flowers. Do not mix daffodils with other flowers unless the daffodils have been in water for 24 hours and the water has been changed.
  • Make sure to not re-cut the stems, as this will initiate the release of the toxic sap.
  • Daffodils have a short vase life of 4-5 days. To prolong their vase life, place stems in 2″ of cold preservative solution, without re-cutting stems. Consider pre-chilling water in the fridge overnight or using ice chips in tap water to bring water temperature down.

Design Tips:

  • Several stems of daffodils in a vase can make a wonderful spring arrangement.
  • Use as feature flowers in designs with other spring flowers after they have been processed properly (in water for at least 24 hours).
  • When designing with floral foam, poke a hole in the foam with another instrument first, before inserting daffodils so as not to clog the stems.
  • Use in a hand-tied bouquet of spring flowers including stock, iris and golden aster.
  • Display with other Dutch products such as irises, tulips and lilies.


  • Poultry keepers thought the flower to be unlucky and disallowed it in their homes, as they believed it would stop their hens from laying eggs.
  • In Feng Shui, daffodils are believed to bring good luck for 12 months if forced to bloom at New Year.
