What’s the Difference Between Asiatic and Oriental Lilies?

The words “Asia” and “Orient” can be used interchangeably to describe the the Eastern part of the world. So when it comes to gardening, you might assume that “Asiatic” and “Oriental” lilies refers to the same flower. However, upon closer inspection, you will learn that these two hybrid lilies are quite different.

Asiatic Lily Asiatic lilies

  • Asiatic lilies are shorter than Oriental lilies, growing only to be 2-4 ft tall
  • typically blooms early than Oriental lilies-blooming in June and July
  • flowers are unscented
  • the blooms are smaller in size; they grow up to 6 inches in diameter
  • the petals have smooth edges
  • Asiatic lilies come in a rainbow of colours and are typically more vibrant in colour than Oriental lilies
  • these lilies are easier to grow, reproduce quicker and are hardier than the Oriental variety; these bulbs can easily double its blooms each year

Oriental Lily Oriental Lily; the Stargazer

  • Oriental lilies are taller and can reach a height of 5-6ft tall
  • blooms in August and September
  • flowers have a strong, spicy fragrance
  • the blooms are larger in size; they can grow up to 9 inches in diameter
  • and due to their size, these plants often require staking
  • the petals have ruffled edges
  • Oriental lilies typically come in whites, pinks and yellows, with a contrasting center; the  “Stargazer” Lily is one of the most popular flowers
  • gardeners need to be more patient with these lilies, as they don’t take root as easily and reproduction is much slower

So as you can see, they are different flowers! But in any case, both are just as beautiful. They would look fabulous in any garden and will also attract butterflies and birds. Plant in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Deadhead to increase blooms next year.
